I've grown up in Santa Maria; I've lived here my whole life my father lived most of his life here. The 131 acres were listed at a price of $19.75 million.<br /> <br />For two decades, Dalidio tried to develop his land. We'll fill you in on how the release went down, and have more on this crazy story tonight on our news at 5 and 6.</p><br clear="all"/><p><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/goatee-the-surfing-goat-freed/" title="Goatee the surfing goat freed">Permalink</a>| <a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/goatee-the-surfing-goat-freed/#comments" title="View user submitted comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><br/> http://www.ksby.com/news/counting-down-60-top-stories-of-60-years-55-51/ 2013-05-23T13:23:57-0500 2013-05-23T17:55:37-0500 *Local News <div align="center"><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/counting-down-60-top-stories-of-60-years-55-51/"><img src="http://www.ksby.com/images/thumbnails/C5E8E819F096EE93A4B9F556117ED462_200_200.jpg" alt="Counting down 60 top stories of 60 years: #55-51" border="0" align="left" vspace="4" hspace="8"/></a></div><p>As we celebrate our 60th anniversary here at KSBY, we're continuing our countdown of the top 60 local stories of the past 60 years.<p>Number 55 is the ongoing Los Osos sewer project.</p><p>Construction began in 2005, but was cancelled when the Los Osos Community Services District went bankrupt.</p><p>New plans for a sewer started in 2007 and gained approval from the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors in March of 2011.</p><p>Construction is currently underway, with a price tag of nearly $190 million dollars, making it the most expensive sewer in the nation.</p><p>At 54, we covered the murder of 15-year old Nicholas Markowitz.</p><p>He was kidnapped on August 6th, 2000, then murdered three days later in Goleta.</p><p>While most of his killers were shortly sent to prison, the mind behind the murder, Jesse James Hollywood, fled and was not found until 2005.</p><p>KSBY followed his 2009 trial in Santa Barbara, and on February 5th, 2010, Hollywood was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.</p><p>The Markowitz murder inspired the movie "Alpha Dog", starring Justin Timberlake.</p><p>Seismic testing around Diablo Canyon was a hot-button issue in the last few years.</p><p>That's number 53 on our list.</p><p>In May of 2010, PG&amp;E said before it's license was renewed, the nuclear power plant needed a full 3D seismic study to map off-shore fault lines that could pose a risk in the event of an earthquake.</p><p>That concern was heightened in March 2011 when a tsunami hit Japan, causing a nuclear meltdown.</p><p>PG&amp;E planned to start its $64 million seismic testing in mid-2012 and that price tag would be tacked onto customers' bills.</p><p>In early 2012 however, local fishermen, environmentalists, and community members voiced their opposition to the testing, worried it may harm marine life.</p><p>This eventually led the California Coastal Commision to deny PG&amp;E a permit and call off seismic testing in November 2012.</p><p>At number 52, a shooting rampage at a Pismo Beach Denny's on March 15th, 2006 is now remembered as one of the bloodiest public shooting sprees in SLO County history.</p><p>A homeless man named Lawrence Edward Woods walked into the restaurant around noon that day.</p><p>He shot and killed two Grover Beach men, then turned the gun on himself.</p><p>Two others were injured in that shooting.</p><p>At number 51, whale sightings at Avila Beach.</p><p>In January of 2012, some bird watchers had a rare encounter with an orca whale, making it the third recorded sighting of killer whales off of San Luis Obispo County.</p><p>And in August of last year, a group of humpback whales had a week-long stay in Avila.</p><p>They had both locals and visitors racing to take their pictures.</p><p>&amp;nbsp;</p></p><br clear="all"/><p><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/counting-down-60-top-stories-of-60-years-55-51/" title="Counting down 60 top stories of 60 years: #55-51">Permalink</a>| <a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/counting-down-60-top-stories-of-60-years-55-51/#comments" title="View user submitted comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><br/> http://www.ksby.com/news/santa-barbara-police-arrest-man-on-suspicion-of-child-molestation/ 2013-05-23T13:06:35-0500 2013-05-23T17:55:37-0500 *Local News <div align="center"><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/santa-barbara-police-arrest-man-on-suspicion-of-child-molestation/"><img src="http://www.ksby.com/images/thumbnails/2CA466E526BEAEC43C3A37B5D97D8DA3_200_200.jpg" alt="Santa Barbara Police arrest man on suspicion of child molestation" border="0" align="left" vspace="4" hspace="8"/></a></div><p>Santa Barbara Police arrested a man this week on suspicion of molesting two five-year olds he was babysitting.<p>Police say the victims' parents returned home on Monday to find Carlos Xitumul-Pineda, 36, of Santa Barbara, and their children partially undressed.</p><p>Police say the parents questioned the children, then called police.</p><p>Officers arrested Xitumul-Pineda at his home. They say he admitted to molesting the victims several times over the past five months.</p></p><br clear="all"/><p><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/santa-barbara-police-arrest-man-on-suspicion-of-child-molestation/" title="Santa Barbara Police arrest man on suspicion of child molestation">Permalink</a>| <a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/santa-barbara-police-arrest-man-on-suspicion-of-child-molestation/#comments" title="View user submitted comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><br/> http://www.ksby.com/news/new-tanker-in-santa-maria-added-to-fight-wildfires/ 2013-05-23T12:49:37-0500 2013-05-23T17:55:37-0500 *Local News <div align="center"><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/new-tanker-in-santa-maria-added-to-fight-wildfires/"><img src="http://www.ksby.com/images/thumbnails/71B341DEA69217CB560CA788D5AAB38E_200_200.jpg" alt="New tanker in Santa Maria added to fight wildfires" border="0" align="left" vspace="4" hspace="8"/></a></div><p>The Santa Maria Air Tanker Base has a new weapon in its arsenal.&amp;nbsp; With wildfire season already underway, the addition comes at the perfect time.<p>"I learned early in my career that I really wanted to be an air tanker pilot," said Captain Christian Holm.</p><p>After spending more than&amp;nbsp;15 years fighting fires from the ground, this hot shot took to the skies.</p><p>"We're here for the workers on the ground, I mean those are the true workers of fire suppression," said the humble captain.</p><p>And the newest addition to the firefighting team is a BAE 146 turbo jet.</p><p>"As you can see we've converted the aircraft, we have a three thousand gallon tank on the inside of it," said Holm.</p><p>Once a passenger airline, the tanker now allows Captain Holm to deliver more than a half mile line of retardant in a matter of seconds.</p><p>"One of the other things that we're able to do, too, is get to fires very quickly.&amp;nbsp; We can fly in excess of 400 mph to the fires," said Holm.</p><p>He says containment is dependent on time, and this kind of speed gives them an important advantage.</p><p>Division Chief Mark Nunez says the addition comes at a great time after an early start to California's fire season.</p><p>"We're several months ahead of where we normally are in fire season," said Nunez. "It's more like fall where the fuels and conditions out there are receptive for large fire growth."</p><p>And with that much potential danger, it gives a 40 year firefighting veteran a reason to keep fighting.</p><p>"We hear about the stories of houses saved, and you know it gives you a really good feeling," said Capt. He is the son and grandson of two others charged in the murder.</p><p>Dudley said Maldonado Jr. faces 25 years to life in prison.</p><p>Ibarra's body was found in the back of a U-Haul truck parked on an Orcutt street on March 19.</p><p>Police said Ibarra was actually killed two days before his body was found. Her daughter, a teacher at Moore Central Junior High, as well as her seventh and eighth grade students were inside their school when the tornado ripped through her town. <br /><br />When the warnings began, Kleine moved her students from her windowed classroom, to a walled off room.<br />"There was no debate from any child, there was no panic," said Bradley.</p><p>There was also no power - no way to communicate. A radio was their only source of information. Outside it was eerily quiet. Then it began.<br />"They could hear everything hitting the school. They could hear the beams and the all of the wood, and the metal, and the houses," said Bradley.</p><p>No one was injured at her school, and hours later, they were able to get out. The children were released to their parents. But not all. <br />"In some cases there were no parents to come pick them up," said Bradley.</p><p>Just six blocks away from Kleine's school, four people died where a 7/11 used to stand.</p><p>"I was back there, two months ago. I gased my car at the 7/11 that is now gone. I traveled down Telephone Road," she said. "All of that is gone now, it's not even a slab now, it's just gone."</p><p>Three miles away - seven children died at Plaza Towers, a place Judy used to substitute teach - the school her children attended. <br />"Seven beautiful little souls are gone."</p><p>Judy said there were warnings, but this storm was so powerful - the local meteorologist gave a dire warning.<br />"He said, this is an alert. This is a warning. Being inside is not going to save you because you need to be underground. Unfortunately, he was correct," said Bradley.</p><p>Judy wants people to know - Moore will rise up.</p><p>"We are a resilient people. They will rebuild. They are Okies," she said. 1500 block of Ocean Way last October.<p>Police say the burglar took several items from the church, including musical instruments.</p><p>DNA evidence was collected at the scene, which police say identified Quick as the suspect.</p><p>Police arrested Quick at his home, where they say they also found property that had been stolen from the church.</p></p><br clear="all"/><p><a poor street addressing problem" border="0" align="left" vspace="4" hspace="8"/></a></div><p>San Luis Obispo County Cal Fire is tackling a new battle.&amp;nbsp; It's not a fire, but difficulties finding people and homes in emergencies. The agency said it is because of poor street addressing.</p><p>Cal Fire wants address numbers to be at least six inches tall and a half-inch thick. It said it is actually now current fire code, but not every home meets this requirement.</p><p>Cal Fire Driver Operator Stephen Yoder told KSBY News on Wednesday that especially at night, it can be very hard to spot a specific home if the address number is not labeled clearly and large. Spending time finding these numbers, he said, can swallow up precious time and that time could be better spent towards emergency assistance.</p><p>"Because of our map books, we know the general area of where the house is gonna be, but we don't know the exact house and we look for the numbers," said Yoder.</p><p>Tina Rose, the Information Officer for Cal Fire, said bad addressing is becoming a significant problem in the unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County. She said there is no way they can help you, if they can't find you.</p><p>San Luis Obispo County Fire Chief Robert Lewin has sent letters to all the local hardware stores to make sure they are always in stock of the large, six-inch reflective address numbers.</p><br clear="all"/><p><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/cal-fire-addresses-poor-street-addressing-problem/" title="Cal Fire addresses poor street addressing problem">Permalink</a>| <a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/cal-fire-addresses-poor-street-addressing-problem/#comments" title="View user submitted comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><br/> http://www.ksby.com/news/local-school-bus-driver-asks-drivers-to-stop/ 2013-05-22T16:14:02-0500 2013-05-23T17:55:37-0500 *Local News <div align="center"><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/local-school-bus-driver-asks-drivers-to-stop/"><img src="http://www.ksby.com/images/thumbnails/48E5041D872FE08E72BF9B7AEEC8CA19_200_200.jpg" alt="Local school bus driver asks drivers to stop" border="0" align="left" vspace="4" hspace="8"/></a></div><p>25 million students ride the school bus each day.<br /><br />The National Transportation Safety Board says it's the safest way for kids to get around, but if other drivers aren't paying attention, it can be dangerous.</p><p>"If the public was more aware what the red lights meant, I think more people would stop," said Judy Miller, a local bus driver.</p><p>Miller has been a school bus driver for 16 years.</p><p>She says the features of school buses have changed, but the law stays the same, and so do the red lights.</p><p>"If you see a bus, pull over and stop, or prepare to stop," said Miller.</p><p>It's a problem&amp;nbsp;KSBY has&amp;nbsp;been following for weeks.</p><p>Video taken at a bus stop on the west side of Santa Maria shows a city bus cruising by a school bus when its red lights are flashing.</p><p>A few weeks later, a California Highway Patrol officer pulled over drivers ignoring the warning signs.</p><p>It's been a battle for some parents to get drivers to stop.</p><p>"We come out here every morning and we are waving our hands and pointing to the lights and big letters saying you have to stop," said parent Keturah Aponte.</p><p>"And when they do stop only one lane of traffic will stop, but the other side just keeps going," said parent Jayme Shope.</p><p>A parent at that same bus stop shot video on Tuesday of a&amp;nbsp;white truck braking to stop, but the car behind rear ends them.</p><p>Miller says it's the bus driver's job to make sure kids are getting on and off safely and the responsibility of other drivers on the road to stop.</p><p>Miller says the solution to this problem is awareness.</p><p>"Watch for those kids because you don't know what they are going to do," she said.</p><p>The NTSB says about 24 children are killed each year from school bus related accidents and about a third of those deaths are caused by drivers not stopping for a bus.</p><p>&amp;nbsp;</p><br clear="all"/><p><a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/local-school-bus-driver-asks-drivers-to-stop/" title="Local school bus driver asks drivers to stop">Permalink</a>| <a href="http://www.ksby.com/news/local-school-bus-driver-asks-drivers-to-stop/#comments" title="View user submitted comments on this entry">Comments</a></p><br/>
